                                  {A true life story}

Smith stood for minutes, staring at the tall building with the inscription ‘cafeteria’. He was confident that he could finally find solace for his ego that had earlier been washed by Emerald’s raining abuses during their bummer encounter days earlier. And perhaps, he could relate with people who unlike Emerald, still had respect and regard for him. Yes, Ukeme and Paul who had their attention buried in the sumptuously looking plate of fufu and melon soup they had before them. Smith quickly walked to the waitress, got a bottle of coke and joined their table.

“Guess what guys…. I’ve finally broken the jackpot”
Ukeme raised his brow to Smith’s direction, with his eyes still fixed on the food.

“Don’t tell me Bet9ja finally paid you”
Paul gave out a sarcastic laugh that displayed yellowish particles of melon stuck between his gums.

“No, something bigger than the largest stake any bet company could afford to gamble with”
Ukeme finally gave Smith a full anxious gaze as he aimed to read the words in his thought.

“Emerald….I finally won her attention….or would I say, she finally came crawling and begging for my attention”
Paul quickly threw the beefy piece of meat down his throat and washed his hands, gearing up for the latest gist on campus airways.

“It all happened at the Art gallery, and guess what: It was just the both of us to ourselves.”
Ukeme signaled at the waitress to step over and clear the dishes so he could lean forward, relax and concentrate.

“Please tell us more, don’t stop now. My eyes itch to hear news my nose have never seen before”
Smith laughed at Ukeme’s sudden poetic rebirth and was deeply happy that he was gradually regaining his lost ego.

“Just like in the Indian movies, I was on my own, flipping through my phone when some soft and tender fingers tapped me from behind. On my romance driven brain I immediately concluded that it was my girlfriend Emem. So I quickly gave 360 degrees turn like an Indian suitor on a love dance, grabbed hold of her arms, while my lips traced hers even in the dim darkness. Behold, a kissing opera began.”
Paul shifted closer to Smith, as the story sounded too advanced for his understanding.

“You mean you guys started kissing just like that?”
Ukeme was really finding it difficult to believe Smith’s story owing to the high profiled impression he had about Emerald.

“Yes, just like that. No foreplay, no toasting, no application for consent, …I was simply gifted a golden opportunity and I grabbed hold of it with both hands”
Smith was gradually winning over as his listeners were now begging to hear more.

“Tell us, how did she react when you kissed? Did she close her eyes?
Paul’s words simply showed that he was already acting a mental drama upstairs.

“Well, you all know how dim the lights in the gallery are, so I can’t tell, but what I’m sure of is that she enjoyed it. As I began, she tilted her head to the right and I immediately took the slow and gentle process to a more sensual level. I brought my lips down to her neck, bite her lower lip and nibbled gently on her earlobe. As the kissing became deeper, I paid attention to her breathing and body language and noticed that she was becoming more responsive, so I began kissing faster…..”
At this point, Ukeme was fully emerged in the gist as he unconsciously left his mouth wide open; maybe reenacting the scene in the imaginary world.

“So I began cuddling her and drawing her figure-eight with my palms rolling gently from her butt up to her boobs and still marking her lips closely. Then suddenly, we heard loud footsteps approaching us from the far end of the gallery and we both took to our heels without a second thought.”
Paul and Ukeme laughed out loud as Smith dropped the last word.

“Wow, you are the man…So tell us, have you guys fixed another date? Have you called her?
It was now Smith’s turn to laugh as he had successfully captured and trapped their curiosity.

“Noooo… I told you we ran out of the gallery. And with the miraculous way everything turned out, there was no time to even get her number. But hey, I can boldly bet at this; just spot her right now and I will go get her eleven digits in just two seconds.”
Paul looked surprisingly overwhelmed. He leaned back on the desk and gave out a deep breath.

“Hmmmmm……so this girl could be so cheap, despite the way she carries herself and dresses high-and-fly over campus like a slay goddess who doesn’t excrete.”
Smith gave a long hiss as he stood up from the meal table.

“I will answer that question when I get back. I need to use the restroom"
Smith excused himself, took a few backward steps, and while turning to walk away, he bumped into someone, hitting her right shoulder and sending her lunch tray crashing on the floor

"Oh my g!…I'm so sorry Miss"
He bent down trying to pick up the roll of fish pie and bottle of Fanta that had been fed to the gods.

"It’s ok. I still have my other arm"
She froze on the spot and sounded soft and gentle. But when she lifted her face, behold, it was the controversial one, Smith.

"You of all people!!  You're a walking disaster!"
Emerald screamed, loud enough to draw the attention of everyone in the cafeteria.

Smith suddenly lost his tongue. The air conditioned cafeteria suddenly turned into a bakery as a pool of sweat rained down on him. Taking a mental note to murder himself later, all smith could do was stare into space, trying to absorb the giggles coming from different corners of the cafeteria. As Emerald turned to walk out of the cafeteria, Smith stood motionless, staring at the television on the wall as he tried to avoid Paul and Ukeme’s disappointing look. After what seemed like eternity, he walked out without another word. It seemed life had decided to make him look stupid… or, make him an object of ridicule. In just 3days after his first conversation with Emerald, he felt his ego crawling on the floor behind gin like a shadow behind a man. He was successfully winning the game until Emerald was awarded a last minute penalty that gave her a two goal lead.
Emerald won again, but Smith was still confident that his day would someday come.
